Canadian Passport Ranks 7th Globally in 2025

In 2025, the Canadian passport has been ranked 7th in the world in terms of global power, according to a new report published by the global consulting firm Henley & Partners. This ranking is based on the number of destinations that Canadian passport holders can travel to without a visa. As of 2025, Canadians can travel visa-free to 188 destinations, placing Canada on par with Malta and Poland, which also hold the 7th position.

Key Highlights of the 2025 Ranking

Canada Surpasses the U.S.:
This year marks a significant milestone for Canada, as it has surpassed the United States in the Henley Passport Index. The U.S. has dropped two positions to 9th place, while Canada has maintained its 7th-place ranking—an improvement from 2023, when it ranked 8th.

Visa-Free Access:
Canadian passport holders can now travel visa-free to 188 destinations, thanks in part to new agreements with countries such as Egypt and Brazil, which lifted visa requirements for Canadians in 2025.

Global Movement:
Although Canada’s ranking remains stable this year, Henley & Partners noted that the Canadian passport has slipped three spots over the past decade—from 4th place in 2015 to 7th in 2025. Meanwhile, countries like Gabon and Togo now require visas from Canadian travelers.

Ranking Methodology

Henley & Partners compiles its Passport Index by evaluating the number of destinations accessible without a visa, or with a visa on arrival or electronic travel authorization (eTA). Destinations that require traditional or electronic visas are not included in the count. The data is sourced from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and supplemented by Henley & Partners’ research team to provide a comprehensive picture of global travel freedom.

How Canada Compares Globally

The Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 passports and their access to 227 destinations worldwide. In 2025, Singapore ranks first, offering visa-free access to 195 destinations. Japan ranks second with access to 193 destinations. At the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan remains at the bottom, with access to just 26 destinations.

One notable country that has seen remarkable growth over the past decade is the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has gained visa-free access to 72 new destinations and now holds the 10th spot in 2025.

How Can You Obtain a Canadian Passport?

To obtain a Canadian passport, you must first become a Canadian citizen. Individuals born in Canada are automatically citizens. For those born outside the country, the first step is to obtain permanent residency (PR) in Canada. The path to permanent residency can be lengthy and involves several different immigration programs.

Once you have obtained PR status, you must meet the following requirements to apply for Canadian citizenship:

  • Physical Presence Requirement: You must have lived in Canada for at least three of the past five years.

  • Tax Requirements: You must have filed your taxes and settled any outstanding tax debts.

  • Citizenship Test: You must pass the Canadian citizenship test.

  • Oath of Citizenship: Finally, you must take the oath of citizenship.

Conclusion

In 2025, the Canadian passport remains one of the strongest and most desirable in the world. This reflects Canada’s strong international relationships and extensive travel freedom. While Canada has seen a slight decline compared to previous years, the passport still offers immense value for global travelers. Whether you’re planning to explore new destinations or aiming to become a Canadian citizen, Canada provides many pathways to access this powerful travel document.
